SUMMARY:Kate Freeman Clark Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Kate Freeman Clark (Holly Springs/Mississippi, 1875-1957) Kate Freeman Clark was the daughter of Edward Clark and Cary Freeman Clark, a descendant of the prominent Walthall family of Holly Springs. Exploring the art section of the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago played a role in Kate's decision to pursue a career as an artist. She enrolled in the Arts Students League in New York where she studied under John H. Twachtman, attended watercolor classes taught by Irving Wiles and oil painting classes under William Merritt Chase, who would play an important role in her development as as an artist. In 1896, for the first of six consecutive summers, Kate Freeman Clark attended Chase's outdoor painting classes at Shinnecock Hills, Long Island. Her works exhibited a little of Chase's influence but she soon developed into her own style of bold brush strokes while maintaining a solidity of form and a skillful subtle use of color and light. The Shinnecock years were her most productive and happiest as she was one of Chase's favorite students. At the turn of the century, Clark began submitting her work to important exhibitions using the name "Freeman Clark" in order to hide her gender. For a period of over twenty years Clark had many works accepted into prestigious shows, including The Corcoran Gallery, The Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and The New York School of Art. William Merritt Chase's death in 1916 and the changing mode of art, introduced by the New York Armory Show of Cubist paintings in 1913, took the heart out of her career, and after losing her grandmother in 1919 and her mother's passing in 1922, Kate Freeman Clark decided to give up painting and return to the Walthall home in Mississippi. Ms. Clark bequeathed to the city of Holly Springs, Mississippi, her family home, her entire collection of paintings and funds to build a museum, known today as The Kate Freeman Clark Gallery. It is important to note that Ms. Clark never sold any of her paintings.

SUMMARY:Tuesday's with Morrie: Student Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Tupelo Reads! We're all on the same page Be a part of Tupelo's FIRST Citywide Literacy Celebration Review: This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility. --Gail Hudson

SUMMARY:Hans Friedrich Grohs - The Glow of Faith
DESCRIPTION:The Glow of Faith: Watercolors and Drawings by Hans Friedrich Grohs This exhibition presents the art of the distinguished second-generation German expressionist, Hans Friedrich Grohs. A recurring theme in Hans Friedrich Grohs’s art is the landscape, most frequently that of his native region in northern Germany, but he also depicted diverse landscapes he saw in his travels abroad. The Glow of Faith includes artwork inspired by the artist’s 1967 visit to Norway’s mystic fjords, and that manifests his abiding faith in God and Nature.

SUMMARY:Tracey Davis
DESCRIPTION:First and foremost, it must be understood that Tracey Davis, a native Mississippian and resident of Florida, was not born an artist, which truly was her heart’s desire. She did have some skill with copying art, but lacked the talent and intuition to create something uniquely hers. At the age of twenty-eight, and in good health, Tracey suffered a stroke while giving birth to her second of three sons. While going through the recovery process afterwards, something unexpected happened. He mind became flooded with all kinds of artistic ideas, in various mediums. Not only were these ideas uniquely hers, but she also knew, without any form of formal training, how to execute them and make them a reality. She worked with several mediums, and was successful with each. Tracey knew that this new talent was really a gift that came in the form of a medical tragedy. She felt that it had divine origin, and prayed for guidance on how it should be used. Always fascinated with mosaics, she began to create mixed media pieces on a larger, shadow box scale. She then decided to try to design a mosaic so small that someone could wear it if they wished. A long time collector of vintage French and German prayer cards, as well as other vintage religious art, she chose to make mosaics featuring these religious themes. Thus, the art of Petite Sacre Masaiques was born. Petite Sacre Mosaiques, or “small holy mosaic,” are award-winning tiny micro-mosaic works of art encased in antique 1880’s to 1940’s watch cases that she restores and enamels herself. In some cases, the enamel work is part of the interior mosaic, and sometimes, she chooses to enamel the outside of the case as well. The mosaic is made up of tiny seashells, hand-dyed mustard and sesame seeds, seaweed and moss, gold filigree, tiny Swarovski crystals, vintage fabric and paper, and early 1900’s European holy cards. Never using any form of pattern, her pieces are one of a kind. Much of her work is so tiny that to be truly seen, one must look through a magnifying glass. Many mosaics hang in their own mixed-media frame or box style shrine, to be enjoyed as fine art pieces, as well as wearable art. http://www.watchmedesigns.net

SUMMARY:Robin Whitfield
DESCRIPTION:Robin Whitfield spends her time exploring the forests, rivers and swamps near her home in Grenada, MS. She works on location with watercolors focused on the seasonal conditions, plants, and animals of specific places. The surface of swamp water, the layered banks of rivers, and the seasonal offerings of field and forest also leave their marks, shapes, and colors directly on her paper. These experiments are leading her into new directions. Robin studied painting at Delta State University where she was exposed to working in the field as a way to sharpen her senses and create a dialogue with nature. She also works for Communities In Schools of Greenwood Leflore Inc. as a Core Arts teaching artist in the public schools and project director of Gallery 208 - the showcase of CIS student work in Greenwood.
