Annual Youth Exhibit and Scholarship


GUMTREE FESTIVAL
41st Annual Celebration of the Arts
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

The Student Art Competition is open to all students in Tupelo, Lee County schools, private schools, or home schools in grades 7 –12.

Prizes
Up to three “Judges’ Choice” ribbons will be awarded for the best artwork in each of the grades. Each “Judges’ Choice” winner will receive prize money at the Opening Reception of the Youth Exhibit.

At each grade level, up to twelve additional pieces of artwork will be selected as “Merit” (Honorable Mention) works. This art will be included in the Museum exhibit and will receive a ribbon, but will not be awarded cash.

A total of $1,500.00 in Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors based on an art portfolio and essay competition. The student competition judges will determine the amount and number of scholarships awarded each year.

All winning artwork will be displayed in the GumTree Museum of Art during and after the GumTee Festival.

To Enter the Competition:
• Enter only original work. Do not copy or trace a published photograph or other artwork.
• Enter artwork created in any medium-sculpture, drawing, painting, pottery, photography, etc.
• Submit up to 2 pieces of art that you completed since April 1, 2011.
• Mount or mat your drawing, painting, or other flat work. Do not enter framed artwork.
Do not enter flat work larger than 36 inches in any one direction, including mat or mount.
• Complete and sign the entry form to the back of each flat artwork or the bottom of 3-D work.

To Enter the Scholarship Competition:
• Follow the above guidelines but include 8-12 pieces of your artwork in a portfolio. If  student’s artwork is being judged in another competition during this time, no more than 5 portfolio entries may be submitted in digital JPEG format on CD, which has to be included in the portfolio. Include a teacher- signed portfolio certification form. Portfolio artwork should have been completed within the past two years.
• Flag any 2 pieces within your portfolio that you wish to be considered for the 12th grade competition.
• Submit an essay, 2 pages maximum, on your body of work, significant influences, or career goals.

Include permission for publication allowing the festival to publish selected essays in the festival guide.

**Art teachers or school designees will be responsible for taking the work to the GumTree Museum of Art on Friday, April 13 from 3:00-4:30pm for the competition.

**Artwork must be collected from the Museum by  representatives of each school on Tues. May 16,  from 2:00pm – 4:30pm. Neither the Museum nor the Festival will be responsible for work left for more than 10 days after the pick up date.
